An anime inspired backdrop forms the world of Oni, combining kung fu with modern weapons against the milieu of a new world order where the Earth is poisoned from industrial neglect and the only peace is through a world government that has established order. The World Coalition Government was born out of the chaos of economic collapse, forming a unifying super state that controlled all of the liveable land still left on the planet with the blessing of those governments that joined it. The TCTF, its internal security force, maintains the peace at the cost of personal liberties, enforcing the will of the state for the good of the people that it protects and that is the question that Oni asks within its own backstory, if it is better to live well while surrendering your freedom and your privacy in exchange for that happiness. Unfortunately, most of the people that live within the world of Oni are more than happy to sacrifice what they have to do just that. Personal freedoms mean little when you can live far and away from the poison that fills the rest of the world.
