In an interview with cNet, Microsoft chairman Bill Gates has suggested that plans for Project Natal might go further than the Xbox 360.

The motion and depth sensing camera known as Project Natal was debuted at E3 in 2009 and was introduced as an interface and controller for Microsoft’s game console.

However, Gates seems to imply that while that may have been Microsoft’s original plan, it didn’t stay that way for long.

“Both the Xbox guys and the Windows guys latched onto that and now even since they latched onto it the idea of how it can be used in the office is getting much more concrete, and is pretty exciting,” said Gates.

“I think there’s incredible value as we use that in the office connected to a Windows PC,” he continued.

“So Microsoft research and the product groups have a lot going on there, because you can use the cost reduction that will take place over the years to say, why shouldn’t that be in most office environments.”

Gates made no mention of using Natal as a game controller on PC, though cross compatibility likely means that this is possible in the future.
