Rockstar has announced that its Vancouver team (formerly Barking Dog Studios) is developing a third title in the fan-favorite franchise Max Payne. Original series creator Remedy Games, who produced the first two Max Payne titles and is hard at work on Alan Wake, does not appear to have a hand in development.

“We’re starting a new chapter of Max’s life with this game,” said Rockstar founder Sam Houser. “This is Max as we’ve never seen him before, a few years older, more world-weary and cynical than ever. We experience the downward spiral of his life after the events of Max Payne 2 and witness his last chance for salvation.”

Featuring a retired Max no longer in New York City, Rockstar promises to provide “more of the classic elements and hyper-intense action that fans have come to love, while moving the story of Max in a new direction.”

The game is scheduled for release late this year on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. Fans looking for more information can sign up for updates at the newly launched official site.
