Earlier this week, Valve announced that it has added DLC support to its popular digital distribution platform, Steam. This will allow developers and publishers to release add-ons to any game that’s available for download through the Steam store. The DLC can even be applied to games that were purchased at retail or outside of Steam, again, so long as that title is sold through the platform.

We asked several leading developers of PC games available on Steam that have had or will soon receive DLC updates, including Bethesda, Criterion, and Treyarch, if they plan to embrace the new functionality. Bethesda, responsible for last year’s critically-acclaimed Fallout 3, was the only one to respond by deadline.

Pete Hines, VP of PR and Marketing at the Maryland-based studio, had this to say: “Our current plan is to continue to use Xbox Live and Games for Windows Live to distribute our DLC for Fallout 3.”

When pressed further for specifics, Hines revealed, “I don’t know if we’d ever release it on Steam or any other digital distribution format for that matter. For right now PC is planned just on GFW LIVE, nothing else.”

The Fallout 3 add-ons in question include Operation Anchorage, which was released in January, and the upcoming The Pitt and Broken Steel DLC.

We’ll continue to inquire with other developers as to any plans they have to support this new initiative by Valve.
