EA has pulled back the curtain on a new follow-up title to American McGee’s 2000 PC-exclusive Alice, in development for the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 at Spicy Horse Games in Shanghai.

“This new project is a dream come true for me and the fans who have kept the Alice flame alive,” said American McGee, senior creative director at Spicy Horse. “EA gave us creative latitude and support on the original game which resulted in something beautiful and daring. This trip through the looking glass promises to be even more exciting.”

The working title of the game is “The Return of American McGee’s Alice.” No release date was provided, but Spicy Horse has stated that the game is in “pre-production and won’t be completed for some time.”

McGee founded Spicy Horse along with business partner Ken Wong in late 2006. The studio was responsible for the episodic series American McGee’s Grimm, available from GameTap.

The original Alice was released by now-defunct Rogue Entertainment and EA in 2000. It garnered praise from critics and fans alike for its dark interpretation of Lewis Carroll’s classic work and striking visual style.

“EA Partners is thrilled to team up with American McGee and Spicy Horse on the next installment of the Alice franchise,” said David DeMartini, senior vice president and general manager of EA Partners. “American McGee’s interpretation of Alice was an instant classic, and EA Partners is ready to help him bring his innovative vision for the franchise to even darker, more exciting places.”

The press release was accompanied by this piece of early concept art.
