Rockstar has announced a sequel to its 2004 Red Dead Revolver, in development at Rockstar San Diego. Red Dead Redemption is set in the American West at the turn of the 20th century and stars a former outlaw, John Marston, in a new open-world action game. Redemption is powered by Rockstar’s own incredibly versatile RAGE engine, which also drove Grand Theft Auto IV, Rockstar Presents Table Tennis, and Midnight Club: Los Angeles.

“The team at San Diego have massively exceeded our expectations with the sheer depth of experiences in Red Dead Redemption,” said Sam Houser, Rockstar Games founder. “The seamless combination of breathtaking beauty and intense action, all woven together with strong plotlines in a massive vibrant, rural environment is mind-blowing. We think this game helps to push the limits of what an open-world gaming experience can be.”

Red Dead Redemption arrives on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 this fall.

If you’re interested in receiving updates on the game, Rockstar has an official site set up where you can sign up for a newsletter.

We’ve posted more screenshots of the game, too.
