New Deus Ex 3 Preview Reveals Storyline and Gameplay Details

Czech gaming and entertainment site Centrum.cz has published a new preview of Deus Ex 3, the prequel to Eidos’ critically acclaimed 2000 action-RPG. Our Czech is a little rusty, so thankfully a translation has popped up on the Eidos forums.
Here are some interesting excerpts:
-The first Deus Ex took place in 2052, but this prequel will have players visiting the year 2027.
-In Deus Ex 3, huge cybernetic syndicates wield more power than national governments. The wealthy upgrade their bodies mechanical implants. In the upper levels of skyscrapers, company strategists are always planning how to sabotage their competition. Someone wants to seize control of not only just the entire market and society, but mainly over the course of human evolution itself.
-The Events of Deus Ex 3 will lead to the establishment of UNATCO, a police organization of which JC Denton, protagonist of the original, was a member. It will be possible to end the game in many different ways, depending upon the player’s choices over the course of play.
-The atmosphere and style combine cyberpunk with detailed renaissance elements, punctuated by an emphasis on color and light to stratify the levels of society present in the game.
-The game will have a greater focus on action than the original. Unlike its predecessor, shooting won’t be impacted by stats as much as player skill. But this doesn’t mean the game got rid of RPG elements entirely. On the contrary: skills and augmentations you gain will impact the choice of your combat techniques. Therefore you will be getting better, without having to worry about artificial handicaps.
-Groups of enemies will have an easily identifiable squad leader, who the player is encouraged to eliminate first so as to weaken the tactical abilities of the squad. AI will react to changes in player behavior, like switching weapons or reloading.
-Cover is important for both the player and his enemies. The cover system will be similar to that of Rainbow Six: Vegas. You will encounter regular human enemies, robots, and bosses.
-Augs are sorted into four categories: combat, stealth, technology (like hacking and lockpicking) and dialogue.
-Dialogue sequences look ordinary at first; you pick from a variety of conversation choices. But you can also glean crucial information from subtle changes in character’s facial expressions and body language, so as to select the best choices in conversation.
-The player will visit a total of five metropolises, including Detroit, Montreal, and Shanghai.
The game is in development at Eidos’ own Montreal studio and is scheduled to be released on the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 in 2010.
