After teasing the game earlier tonight, EA has officially announced Dante’s Inferno, an action game based loosely on the first canticle of Dante Alighieri’s 14th-Century epic, The Divine Comedy. Over the course of the poem, the titular character passes through the nine circles of Hell: limbo, lust, gluttony, greed, wrath, heresy, violence, fraud and treachery. Which sounds like a pretty natural setting for a videogame, if you ask us.

“The time is right for the world of interactive entertainment to adapt this literary masterpiece, and to re-introduce Dante to an audience that, until now, may have been unfamiliar with the remarkable details of this great work of art,” said Jonathan Knight, executive producer on the game. “It’s the perfect opportunity to fuse great gameplay with great story.”

The game is being developed by the EA Redwood team which most recently brought us the sci-fi horror thriller, Dead Space. EA has launched an official site for the new game, where users can sign up for a newsletter.
