At a London press event, Videogamer.com reports that outspoken developer, Tomonobu Itagaki, has stated that he will be moving away from the Ninja Gaiden franchise and will be flexing his creativity with another project. This also confirms what had also been previously reported by Kotaku.

He has been quoted as saying:

“I think that I’m going to continue to explore the action genre and do something that allows me to go in directions that I haven’t been able to go with the Ninja Gaiden series, with an entirely new franchise.”

Itagaki goes on to explain that the sequel is the “definitive game in the Ninja Gaiden franchise” and that they “were able to accomplish everything that we wanted to achieve with this franchise.” It was not clear whether it means that the franchise will continue on with another development team, or what the new franchise that Itagaki plans to work on will be about.

However, according to Kotaku’s article, he has expressed interest in a WW2 venue similar to what “Clint Eastwood is doing for that time period.”

Ninja Gaiden 2 is due out on June 6.
