SEGA Announces Ultraviolent Wii-Exclusive MadWorld; First Media

By Alex Petraglia on Thursday, May 15, 2008 at 12:15 PM EST

SEGA officially drew back the curtain today on MadWorld, a unique and highly-stylized third-person action game exclusive to the Wii.

The title is in production at Platinum Games, with the development team being headed by Executive Director and Producer Atsushi Inaba. Inaba has worked on critically acclaimed titles in the Phoenix Wright and Steel Battalion series and served as President of Clover Studios between 2004 and 2006, where he developed such highly-regarded titles as the Viewtiful Joe series, Okami and God Hand.

Drawing from graphical novels like Sin City, the visuals of MadWorld are in black and white, with splashes of bright red blood to add punctuation. Players will use their environment and weapons around them to defeat enemies, from chainsaws to street signs, while voice-overs provide satirical “sports commentary” to the action. Expect plenty of over-the-top violence and irreverent humor.

With regards to plot, Inaba had this to say: “It’s a story that we feel will motivate the player to move forward and keep the same comical, over-the-top nature and while we are preparing a very fun and interesting story.”

Shigenori Nishikawa (Resident Evil 1, 4) makes his directorial debut with MadWorld. He issued a statement to the non-bewiievers. “To all the gamers who are tired of Wii games- MADWORLD was born from the idea of making a truly “innovative and exciting” game. But to make this game a reality, we needed a mix of the innovative controls afforded by the Nintendo Wii and a brand new Black-White-Red graphic style.”

MadWorld is set for release in early 2009.
