First Guitar Hero IV Details Shed

By Alex Petraglia on Monday, May 12, 2008 at 6:00 PM EST

The June issue of Game Informer has an exclusive cover story on the fourth major entry in Activision’s top-selling Guitar Hero franchise.

Guitar Hero IV will follow closely in the footsteps of Rock Band, offering new instruments including a bass, microphone, and six-piece drumset that includes two cymbals. It is unknown whether or not the Guitar Hero IV instruments and Rock Band instruments will be cross-compatible.

Due to the recent falling-out between Gibson and Activision, Guitar Hero IV’s guitars will not be licensed and instead will be custom-designed by the developer. They will incorporate a currently unrevealed feature that will “directly impact the way you play Guitar Hero in the future.”

Rock stars can step into the studio to create their own songs and share them with other players online courtesy of the newly minted Guitar Hero Tunes service, but these tracks will be devoid of vocals.

Players will even be able to design their own musicians, album art, and instruments on-screen from scratch.

While no song titles were yet confirmed, Van Halen, The Eagles, Sublime, and Linkin Park will all be making appearances on the tracklist. All songs in the game will be master tracks.

The game is in development at Red Octane and Neversoft and will be arriving on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii by year’s end. Look for more details and the first media in the coming weeks.

Activision has two other upcoming Guitar Hero franchise titles, including the ‘On Tour’ mobile version and the Aerosmith edition.

Among the “new technology” that will change the way you play is a distortion pedal that hooks into the back of the bottom of the guitar. Some of the guitars out there (concept confirmed on the wii) have the hook up for this.

Did any of that even remotely appeal to anybody? That meager list of artists is hardly ideal, and does anyone else see the futility in making a make-your-own-song feature in a guitar hero game? I think we can all imagine what sort of fruit that tree will bear.

Ever since I was disappointed with Guitar Hero III for a lot of reasons (rise of difficulty, lack of DLC, terrible character design) and extremely impressed with Rock Band, I thought I would just stick with RB and just not buy what would be GH IV (I’m still not buying GH:Aerosmith though). This bit of news definitely intrigues me with the create-a-track mode though. I could see myself having fun with that. As long as Red Octane/Activision learn from their mistakes, I might buy this game once again.

Although, if they make it so I can’t just use my Rock Band equipment for GH IV, I might just stick with RB2.

I wonder if you will be able to make custom songs for already made songs. Like note charts like the people who hack GH do. Like they play the song over the game and just play their custom note charts. Or will the game just have each note play a different sound and you can make some sort of song. IDK, that would be horrible. I like the hacking way better. You can play whatever song you want.

Guitar Hero IV will follow or not follow the Rock Band. But it has its own identity now.
