Mass Effect - Shepard

When SecuROM was revealed as the copy protection that would be used for Bioware’s PC port of Mass Effect, it was also revealed that it would require a periodic check in order to verify that your copy was legitimate. If it could not be verified after ten days (such as if the PC the game was being played on was not connected to the ‘net all the time), the player would then be required to call EA in order to get their copy reactivated in order to continue playing. Disappointed and angry fans quickly made their feelings known on the official boards as well as everywhere else that the story had been reported.

In a post on the official Mass Effect Community forum, Community Manager, Jay Watamaniuk, has posted the decision made by Bioware and EA to back off from their initial use of the ten day periodic activation check after seeing the negative reaction that it had generated. Instead, it will now use a one-time activation check and not require the DVD to be in the drive during play.

Kotaku also reports that Spore will also share the same security.
