TV Channel Added to Wii

Japanese Wii owners get the goods again.

Nintendo has quietly added another new channel to the Wii: TV Guide Channel. According to a post on NeoGAF, and subsequent youtube video, the channel is used to bookmark channels and send email reminders to users’ personal email addresses about the scheduled channel. It also appears that users can also sync the Wii Remote with the TV connected to the Wii and watch TV using the Wii Remote. Users can change channels and control volume while the Wii is on and synced. A simple press of the Home button returns you to the Guide.

This is a Japan-only channel and will remain as such due to the way Japanese TV works. Because there is only one broadcast provider in Japan, Nintendo is able to add this functionality for free. The rest of the world, however, has too many providers, time zones, and channel variety to make anything of this magnitude feasible without a steep cost. Maybe one day we’ll get something akin to this, but in the meantime, we can only sit by in jealousy.
