Snake Bustin’ Out

Earlier today, Konami of America released two teaser sites to promote awareness of Metal Gear Solid 4’s impending release to Japan and North America simultaneously. Among a downloadable wallpaper, streaming trailers, and screenshots, there is also a downloadable virtual timer that counts down to the now-confirmed release date of June 12, 2008.

In addition to the release date, the sites also reveal details regarding the previously reported open beta of Metal Gear Online. Beginning in April, customers who put down a pre-order for MGS4 will be given a beta key that they can input onto their Playstation 3 system, giving them open access to MGO’s beta once it goes live late that month. All pre-orders will also come with a free DVD of The Metal Gear Saga 2.0, the second volume of the series that was previously available for pre-orders of Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence. In 2.0, fans will have access to a Prologue that recaps the entire Metal Gear story so far, a 20th anniversary retrospective, character bios for all characters bearing the “Snake” moniker, as well as a collection of trailers for MGS4.

Finally, the first five maps of Metal Gear Online’s Starter Pack have been revealed on the website.

Ambush Alley: The first of several new areas, this former town now stands as a derelict from the warring conflict. The scattered debris will make for impeding movement as well as fire cover, and the twisted streets make for different paths for teams to navigate through.

Gronznyj Grad: Once the base of operations for MGS3 villain Volgin, the storage facility of the Shagohod now stands as a forgotten monument with open rooftops and abandoned indoor areas where today’s crop of soldiers can use for stealth and strategy, or face joining the ghosts of the past.

Midtown Maelstrom: Shown several times in trailers, this ominous alleyway of abandoned cars and fierce winds serve as the heart of conflict among the two powers, with Snake caught right in the middle of the crossfire (and now, so will players).

Urban Ultimatum: A popular map from the first MGO, this area of buildings and alleyways has been remade for the sequel. One can only hope that players will be able to effortlessly roll from rooftop to rooftop like ninjas as they could in the original map.

Blood Bath: Clearly anything but a scenic tourist resort, this area will likely resemble MGS3 Online’s “Killhouse” map, a small and confined area where players can quickly find blood (or wind up bloody on the floor).

Stay tuned for further details as the sites update.
