Today, Sony made use of its annual “Destination Playstation” conference to announce a trio of release dates and bundles that are bound to make the Playstation platform the ultimate destination for early adopters and indecisive onlookers.

The first and inarguably most significant piece of propaganda was the official release date for Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Dated for the 2nd Quarter of 2008 (with the all but confirmed date of June 12), Solid Snake’s final adventure has been fixed in gamers’ crosshairs since its unveiling.

Konami will also reward early preorders with a chance to test drive the online portion of MGS4, simply titled “Metal Gear Online,” as anyone who lays down the cash will automatically be qualified to participate in the multiplayer beta for Metal Gear Online, starting late April.

But the gathered intel doesn’t stop there. In order to really hammer down the point that MGS4 is the primo reason to buy a PS3, Sony is also releasing a bundle consisting of the game, the Dualshock 3 wireless controller, and the 80 GB PS3 system for $499. And if you haven’t been able to keep track of which system doesn’t do what, rest assured that the PS3 included in this bundle does support backwards compatibility, so rookies can take part in the fantastic “triology” of Metal Gear Solid games dating back to the PS1 and PS2.

Dualshock 3

Speaking of the Dualshock 3, gamers won’t have to wait until June to get their vibration fix. The revised Sixaxis controller will be available for purchase on April 2008 for $54.95 (pricier than an Xbox 360 controller, not as pricey as a Nintendo Wiimote plus nunchuck), allowing force feedback for several high profile PS3 games, including the launch game Resistance: Fall of Man and Gran Turismo 5: Prologue, which is being released the same month as the controller.

Also thundering down from the heavens this June is the God of War Entertainment Pack for PSP, a godly bundle featuring a blood-red edition of the PSP Slim with Kratos’ not-so-heavenly mug plastered on the back, along with a copy of his newest adventure, God of War: Chains of Olympus. The bundle will also include a UMD copy of the hit comedy Superbad.

With a triple dose of shocking announcements and two godly bundles, Sony is primed to deliver a solid year for Playstation fans, both big and small.
