Phil Harrison Resigns

In an announcement that can only be described as jaw dropping, Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios President Phil Harrison announced that he will be resigning from Sony come February 29th. Kazuo Hirai, President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. will assume responsibilities as president while maintaining his current duties.

This comes as a blow to every Sony fan, as Phil Harrison has been the most notable mouthpiece for Sony behind PlayStation father Ken Kutaragi. In 1992, Phil joined Sony Electronics Publishing, Ltd, a few years before the launch of the first PlayStation. The company changed its name to Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, and helped to usher in every PlayStation platform since. He carved out strong relationships with developers and publishers alike, effectively changing the video game industry as a whole over the course of a decade. He is also responsible for SCE Group’s strong first party game development and new online direction.

Kazuo Hirai had this to say about the resigning president:

“As one of the founding members of SCE, Phil played a key role in the development and growth of the PlayStation business and our industry. It is sad to see him departing from SCE, but I wish to express my gratitude for his many invaluable contributions and also wish Phil the very best of luck in his future endeavors.”

Phil also had some words about his time with Sony:

“The past 15 years at Sony Computer Entertainment has been the defining journey of my life so far. I am grateful to all the PlayStation family for their incredible support, guidance and friendship. It has been a privilege to serve as part of the team and be inspired by them on a daily basis. I am so proud of everything PlayStation has achieved and will continue to support its future in every way I can.”

Phil epitomized much of what Sony Computer Entertainment has come to represent in the industry. It will be sad to see him go. Hopefully he finds success in whatever endeavors he pursues in the future. The PlayStation family will surely miss him.
