European Wii Owners Basking in Commodore Goodness

European Wii owners are getting all the goodies this year. Well, look out because another one is headed your way. Later this year, European Wii owners will get the chance to relive some true gaming classics when the Commodore 64 releases on the Virtual Console with International Karate and Uridium, both priced at 500 points a piece.
For those too young to remember, the Commodore 64 was the de-facto computer gaming platform between 1982 and 1994. In an era before Microsoft expanded into gaming and PC gaming became a convoluted mess of graphics cards and OS incompatibilities, the Commodore 64 was the platform of choice, with over 4,000 unique games released over its lifetime. In fact, it’s still regarded as the best selling computer model of all time, moving 22 million units over the course of its recorded life and cementing a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records for the feat.
The Commodore 64 was such a heavy weight that in 2005 the Commodore Gaming company was established to again push the Commodore 64 brand into mass awareness. Now it’ll go into overdrive with the Wii. Bala Keilman, CEO of Commodore Gaming, said of the alliance:
“The massive impact the Commodore 64 had on video-gaming is still evident today with many gamers remembering the computer and its games with great fondness. By working with Nintendo of Europe, we are ensuring that future generations of gamers can play some of the best and most popular titles that kick-started the computer games revolution and so keep the C64 legacy in gamers hearts.”
Laurent Fischer, Managing Director of European Marketing & PR for Nintendo Europe added:
“We are extremely pleased to be working with Commodore Gaming to provide even more retro hits for Wii owners to choose from on Virtual Console. With over 184 classic titles now available to enjoy, Virtual Console on Wii is a great way for users to access a breadth of classic retro games. We hope that this great choice of games will bring nostalgia to our gaming fans, while an entirely new generation of video game players can experience a host of classic games for the very first time.”
If there’s one legacy that won’t die, Commodore 64 is it. Now that the original is appearing on Wii, it’s only a matter of time before the retro machine is re-released with a new coat of paint and a low price tag. Throw some waggle on it and all will be well. Commodore Gaming, make it so.
