GDC 08: id Software Announces Quake Live

By Skyler Sutter on Tuesday, February 19, 2008 at 7:57 PM EST

The previously announced browser-based game from id Software dubbed Quake Zero has now resurfaced as Quake Live.

The game will be accessed through quakelive.com and will be supported entirely by in-game advertising, not unlike EA’s upcoming Battlefield Heroes and GarageGames’s browser-based Fallen Empires: Legion.

Created by id Software as an all-new way to deliver the excitement and energy of first-person multiplayer action to a broader audience than ever before, QUAKE LIVE offers game players of all skill levels a totally free and easily accessible multiplayer gaming experience and community through a single website at quakelive.com.

Every element of the experience, including friends lists and communication, sponsored events and tournaments, matchmaking, stats tracking, and even the game itself is accessed and delivered free of charge through the web browser.

Not much else is known about the game itself, or how the in-game advertising will work, but we do know that the technology is based off of the Quake III Arena engine.

For a chance to participate in the Quake Live Beta, head on over to the official website and sign up.

Good to see more and more people working to give the lie to the too-often expressed idea that both pc gaming is dead and browser based games can’t ever compete for quality of gameplay with console games. The more we work toward excellence in browser games, the more excellent they’ll become. That’s not magic. That’s just math. And the more competition there is, the more we will urge each other to higher and higher quality. Thanks for covering this.
