Avatar Reality are giving GDC attendees an early look at Blue Mars, a massively multiplayer online virtual world. The game makes use of CryTek’s CryENGINE 2, and as you might expect from the technology that brought us Crysis, it looks fantastic.
Set in 2177 AD on a terraformed Mars, users will be able explore the world and create their own unique avatars when Blue Mars enters public beta at the end of the year.

One can only hope that the eventual state of this game resembles the world of Kim Stanley Robinson’s “Blue Mars” - a novel/series about the pitfalls and turmoil surrounding a terraformed Mars. Unfortunately the game looks more like Second Life 2 than an engaging simulation of a possible future.
