GDC 08: Daily Journal Day 2

By Alex Petraglia on Tuesday, February 19, 2008 at 9:00 AM EST

9:35 AM

I failed to mention yesterday that I’m now staying with friends here in San Francisco. No more cheap downtown hotels for this world-renowned journalist!

Anyway, I was awoken by this adorable face. That’s Kobe. Like the basketball player, not the steak…as I incorrectly assumed.

Kobe is quite friendly and thought it prudent to jump up onto my bed and lie down on my back as I slept this morning. I stuck a camera in his face to exact my revenge on the little brute.

11:25 AM

One of my hosts suggested that I use nextmuni.com to check the times for approaching inbound trains. I do, and the time listed is off by about ten minutes. I do so very much enjoy standing out in the rain first thing in the morning.

12:10 PM

After wandering up and down the streets for a while, I finally find my way to the Westin Hotel where D3 Publisher is hosting a very special press event.

I take some pictures and play something cool, but an NDA prevents me from saying anymore. You shall find out soon enough.

2:00 PM

Head to Moscone West press lounge. Do some email checking and write some impressions from the D3 thing.

5:00 PM

Walk over to the W Hotel, which is all of fifty yards away. The hotel is simply exquisite and the lobby/lounge area is bustling with GDC attendees. I’ll be sure to stay here next year.

Sony’s Blogger Lounge is located on the second level and I walk in to play a few minutes of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue.

5:20 PM

There’s a special PC gaming consortium being held now. Those handsome chaps are from companies including Acer, Dell, Microsoft, nVidia, and Intel.

Mark Rein is part of the group and shows up twenty minutes late and out of breath.

The cheese and crackers and fruit and assorted cookies that are offered are fit for royalty.

The talk is pretty good too I guess.

6:30 PM

I stick around after the presentation to talk to Rein. I ask him if I can call him the “$2b Dollar Man.” He responds simply by putting his pinky to his lip and in his best Dr. Evil voice proclaims: “Two…billllllioooonnn dolllars…” I try to take a picture of him doing it but he won’t let me. We continue to joke about how ludicrous the whole situation was.

It’s really hard not to like Mark. He has this boyish, affable manner to him that shines through even when he’s talking about something as mundane as software renderers.

The funny thing is, after spending twenty minutes talking to him, I’m now certain that if he were to tell me the earth is flat, I’d start to be seriously concerned about falling off the edge.

7:45 PM

Because it’s raining so hard, I decide to take a cab instead of walking to my next thing. It takes a good thirty minutes to finally catch one. A Hasidic Jew in a black Lincoln Town Car kept pulling up to the curb and offering to drive me for $20, but I politely refused. Three times.

I arrive at a club called The Public where Sony Online Entertainment is holding a party. It’s in a seedier, more industrial part of town, although the club itself is pretty upscale and hip and reminds me of some places in Manhattan’s Meat Packing district.

The event is suppose to help promote SOE’s upcoming PC/PS3 spy MMO The Agency, but they’re just showing an older trailer of the game on loop while talking about a scholarship they’ve set up for girls looking to study game development. The crowd doesn’t really seem into it, nor am I, so it’s time to head home for the night.

PS- Yes, this is the second picture of Adam Sessler I have taken in as many days. I didn’t even notice he was there until after I took the shot. He will probably need to get a restraining order out against me by week’s end.

11:05 PM

Just finished retyping my schedule for the rest of the week. I basically had three things to go to today, and I’m already falling on my face.

Tomorrow, nine different events to attend.

If I don’t make it, kindly call for backup.
