Against All Odds, No More Heroes Already Showing Strong Sales

Oh, how far No More Heroes has come since its shameful Japanese launch event which was attended by practically no one.
According to January NPD data and sales figures released by Marvelous Interactive Inc., the game’s Japanese publisher, American retailers have sold between 65,000 and 100,000 copies of No More Heroes since its release on January 22. Compare that to the 40,000 copies sold in Japan since December.
So far, 160,000 copies have been shipped to European retailers. The game is set to be released there March 7.
No More Heroes is 2008’s first dark horse title. The game is brimming with violent and sexual content, something the vast majority of Wii owner’s do not easily gravitate toward.
Japanese Wiiers are known to be predisposed to first-party Nintendo titles alone, so 40,000 is actually a fairly impressive sum for the Land of the Rising Sun.
Finally, Ubisoft, which is publishing the game in North America, did not seem to devote the resources necessary to successfully market the game in the States.
In spite of all this, these early sales numbers are promising. It must be immensely rewarding for Goichi Suda, unquestionably one of the most under-appreciated game devlopers in the entire industry, to finally be able to have his Strawberry on the Shortcake and eat it too.
Look for our review of the game as soon as I return from GDC.
