Gamepro Leaks Gears of War 2? (Updated)

Gears of War 2 leaked by Gamepro?

Gamepro.com has just recently unveiled the cover for its latest issue and any keen-eyed observer will quickly note the reference to “Gears of War 2”. In fact, two references to the game are on the cover, one in the side bar to the left and another above the magazine’s logo. Unfortunately, the accompanying text doesn’t answer any questions as to why it was included but Rainbow Six Vegas 2 took the cover spot.

With the Game Developers Conference only two weeks away, one has to wonder what Epic Games will be showcasing during the show. Theories abound and the recent news that John Schappert will deliver a keynote along with rumors that Epic is carving out a nice big booth next to Microsoft’s only help fuel the fire. Epic Games vice president Mark Rein has told Eurogamer that GDC is “the show where we sell our engine not our games”. Whether this will be true this year, however, remains to be seen.

Until the conference comes and goes, rumors will continue to circulate the internet as fans work themselves into a frenzy for the sequel to arguably one of the biggest games of 2006. Gamepro’s cover only helps to fan the already roaring flames into a conflagration that will only be satisfied with blood. The Gears of War kind.

Update: Seems Mark Rein of Epic Games has refuted Gamepro’s cover, stating:

It is complete nonsense. We have not announced a sequel to Gears of War to Gamepro or anyone else for that matter.

That ends the speculation. The internet whimpers just a little bit with the knowledge.
