Update 6:30 PM EST 1/31/08

Activision has contacted a number of outlets who were kind enough to link to us today, including The Shack and Kotaku, claiming that the information presented here is incorrect. Because of this, I find it necessary to now clarify my statements.

It is true that Activision did not issue an official public statement today with these announcements. However, Activision claiming that our information “is not correct” may or may not be true. It may just be that this information is not yet meant to be made public. It also may be that Activision is now reconsidering the price-points, following complaints from commenters on both Kotaku and Shacknews.

When the company issues a press release with the full scoop, we’ll know for certain.

Finally, I sincerely apologize if you believe what I published today was misleading. As I said before, this information was not fabricated, but instead made publicly available on two of Red Octane’s own official websites. If anything, Activision is the one not telling the full-story…

Original Story

I previously expressed my adulation for the new Guitar Hero III controllers when we announced that standalone guitars would be made available in 2008, so there’s no need to relive that excessive fawning.

Regardless, RedOctane and Activision have finally ironed out all the particulars. Living room rock stars can purchase standalone Les Paul controllers in March. The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 compatible guitars will be sold for $69 USD, while the Wii’s will retail for $59.

In case you’re afraid that you’ll have no idea what to look for upon arriving at your local electronic store, print out these images and show them to your friendly underpaid sales associate:

Finally, a collection of new Guitar Hero III screenshots were released, on the off-chance you’ve forgotten what the game looks like:
