Valve Outlines Significant Team Fortress 2 Update Plans

Major changes are on the way for what some (re: us) are calling the best multiplayer experience of 2007.
Speaking to PC Gamer, Valve has announced that the team has big plans in store very soon for the much beloved Team Fortress 2.
Unlockable Items
Players who complete class-specific Achievements will receive specialized, class-specific unlockable items. For example, the Medic, who will be among the first to enjoy the update’s features, will gain ‘Overhealer,’ which permanently doubles his target’s potential health.
Unlockable items will be made available at the updated Loadout menu. The team is still exploring potential balancing issues with these new unlockables, but the new Medic achievements and subsequent gameplay enhancements should arrive in less than a month.
Medic Achievements
The 36 new Medic Achievements are as follows:

What certain Achivements such as ‘Invite Join Charge’ or ‘Charge Juggle’ actually mean is anyone’s guess, but we’ll know soon enough.
All other classes will inevitably receive new character-specific Achievements in addition.
A New Gameplay Mode
In the new gameplay mode, the Blue team must escort a mining cart on rails across the map before time runs out. The more Blue players who stand around the cart, the faster its velocity. If but a single Red opponent approaches, the cart will be brought to a standstill. Think of it as a regular control-point map, but the target is constantly in motion.
Three New Maps
Two new maps, Badlands and Goldrush, are expected to be released in about a month from now. The latter features the new ‘escort’ gameplay mode outlined above.
A new capture the intelligence map, essentially a redesigned version of cp_well, is expected sometime in the next two weeks and may arrive as early as tomorrow.
Cost and Console Iterations
As always, these updates will be freely available via STEAM to Team Fortress 2 owners. Valve is eager to release a similar DLC for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 iterations of The Orange Box, but must obviously rely on Microsoft and Sony’s cooperation to do so.
