Guitar Hero Franchise Sales Top $1b, 14m Copies

The Guitar Hero franchise has set an industry record: over $1 billion USD in sales in the past 26 months. Since the original’s release in late 2005, Activision has sold more than 14 million copies of a Guitar Hero game in North America alone.
Additionally, Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock sold more units than any other game in 2007 and is consequently the best-selling videogame of all time in a single calendar year. Rockers have already downloaded more than five million GH3 tracks online.
“Guitar Hero is one of the biggest brands and one of the most powerful distribution platforms in all of entertainment today,” said Michael Griffith, President and CEO of Activision. “Guitar Hero’s popularity with broad audiences is a confirmation that video games have become a true mass medium.”
