The New York Times is reporting that EA is primed to announce Battlefield Heroes, a free, online-only take on their hit Battlefield FPS series.
The game will not be available at retail, instead EA will try to generate revenue through ads and online microtransactions. EA took a similar path with the FIFA series in Korea in 2006 to great success.
Heroes sports a heavily stylised new look not entirely dissimilar to the characters of Team Fortress 2. The gameplay is set to be simplified for the new iteration with shorter matches and a gentler difficulty curve. The image at the top of this post is from Battlefield 2. It’ll be interesting to see how scenes like that look when Battlefield Heroes arrives this summer.
