The Dark Mod Releases ‘Thief’s Den’ Teaser Demo

The Dark Mod, a Doom 3 total-conversion project inspired by my favorite game of all time, has released its first public alpha, entitled ‘The Thief’s Den.’

The development team describes Thief’s Den as a brief but “complete, fully playable mission, and includes a good selection of the main Dark Mod features.”

Seeing as this is only a teaser demo, The Dark Mod team felt it prudent to include the following disclaimer:

Keep in mind that The Dark Mod is still a work in progress and this is reflected in the demo. Voices are temporary placeholders, for example, and AI behaviour is not yet fully developed. You will certainly find bugs and glitches but we hope that doesn’t spoil your enjoyment too much.

Any flaws or failings in this demo do not necessarily indicate limitations in The Dark Mod’s potential but just this particular demo — which was originally begun as a very rough accompaniment to a mission development tutorial. It was never intended for release as a playable mission but was modified into a workable game so everyone could see the current state of progress and have some fun.

To play it, you’ll need a fully retail copy of Doom 3 installed and patched to the latest version. We’re also hosting the patch, should you need it. Thief’s Den works in both Windows and Linux, but not OS X.

Installation instructions can be found at The Dark Mod Wiki. We’d like to note that Step #4 under Windows installation proved problematic for us, but you can avoid this step by simply selecting The Dark Mod from the ‘Mod’ menu at the Doom 3 main screen when the game is started normally.

In my first run-through, I completed all the demo’s objectives in about fifteen minutes. While the gameplay is definitely rough around the edges, the team has done a superb job of distilling the essence of the Thief universe and I greatly look forward to their future releases.
