Eidos announced today that it will be publishing a Highlander game, based on the cult film and television series. As the immortal Owen MacLeod, the player will battle his way through medieval Scotland, feudal Japan, and even modern-day New York City. In addition to classic weapons combat, gamers will have a vast array of powers and abilities at their disposal.

Darren Barnett, Development Director at Eidos, had this to say:

“HIGHLANDER itself is a cult classic. Practically everyone has heard of it and we wanted to offer the first ever next-generation videogame of the franchise. Having a central character that is immortal and has roamed the earth for 2000 years opens up so many gameplay opportunities in terms of story, environments, predicaments and enemies – HIGHLANDER is a thrilling adventure for both fans of the franchise and fans of explosive, fast-paced third person action games.”

The game is powered by Epic’s Unreal Engine 3 and its story is being developed by David Abramowitz, who wrote the TV series.

Highlander is being developed by French outfit Widescreen Games, whose past credits include Dead to Rights II and Dune, and is set to be released later this year on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 and PC.
