The newest issue of German magazine PC Games has the skinny on the latest game in the long running survival-horror franchise Alone In The Dark, previously known as Alone In The Dark 5 and Alone In The Dark: Near Death Investigation.

Set in 2008, you play as Edward Carnby, the main protagonist from the first game as you search for answers to supernatural occurences while you battle your way through New York City’s Central Park.

The game is being handled by French developer Eden, best known for games such as Need For Speed: Porche Unleashed and Test Drive Unlimited. Lorenzo Carcaterra, author of the popular novel Sleepers, is writing the story and although we don’t much of anything about it, we do know it involves some sort of time traveling.

There will be a fairly large area of New York that players will be able to explore at their will, but the developers don’t quite consider it an open-ended type game. The game’s plot will keep the player on a more focused path, but they will still be free to explore a large portion of New York City.

Unsurprisingly, driving will take up a large chunk of the gameplay. Carnby possesses the ability to hotwire cars, and because Central Park is so big, a car will be necessary to get from one area to the other. Given Eden’s past development history, you can expect this portion of the game to be done right.

Fire and lighting also plays an integral part of the gameplay. It will be necessary to navigate the game’s vast stretches of darkness, and Carnby can also use fire as a weapon to defend himself. Objects like tables and chairs can be broken and used as makeshift torches, or catch on fire and completely and burn away.

It certainly is an ambitious sounding game. Will Eden Games be able to pull if off and revive the Alone In The Dark franchise? The game is currently slated to be released in March of this year, so keep your eyes open.
