November NPD: US Gaming Software Sales Top $1.3b (Updated)

With the NPD Market Research Group’s numbers released today for November’s console and software sales, it’s easy to see why gaming companies love the Holidays.
The Nintendo Wii was the top console sold last month, moving 981,000 units, up from October’s 519,000. Nintendo’s strategy of catering to the mainstream and casual gamer continues to pay off in spades.
Microsoft’s Xbox 360 finished in second with 770,000 units sold (366,000 for October), while the PlayStation 3 trailed with 466,000. Looking at things in a positive light for Sony, that’s a 161% growth since October’s 121,000 units.
While we do not cover portables here at Primotech, it’s worth noting that the Nintendo DS sold a staggering 1.53 million units during the month. Additionally, the last-gen PlayStation 2 outsold the PS3 by 30,000 units.
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare for the Xbox 360 was the month’s top selling game, with 1.56 million copies now in customer’s hands. Super Mario Galaxy for the Wii was next, with 1.12 million copies, followed by Assassin’s Creed for the Xbox 360 with 980,000 units sold.
Rounding out the top twelve are:
- Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (PS2) 967,000
- Wii Play (Wii) 564,000
- Mass Effect (Xbox 360) 472,793
- Call of Duty 4 (PS3) 444,000
- Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (Wii) 426,000
- Halo 3 (Xbox 360) 387,000
- Assassin’s Creed (PS3) 376,843
- Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games (Wii) 328,314
- Rock Band (Xbox 360) 311,903
Also of interest: the PC-exclusive Crysis sold 86,633 copies.
Halo 3 was October’s top-seller with 433,800 copies, but its numbers clearly dropped off in November.
Microsoft was the month’s biggest winner on the home console front, with $763 million in revenue, compared to $587 million for the Wii and $364 million for PS3.
The total $2.63 billion the industry raked in last month marked a 52% increase since 12 months ago.
As always, these numbers refer to “sell-through,” that is, actual units sold to final consumers, not to stores or other distribution channels.
A million thanks as always to the NPD Group for making this data public.
(Updated Friday December 14 at 10 AM EST): NPD has revealed that the tie-in rates for the Wii, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 are 3.86, 4.01, and 6.85, respectively. The tie-in ratio refers to the number of games sold per individual console.
