2K Sports Unveils Don King Presents: Prizefighter

By Alex Petraglia on Monday, December 10, 2007 at 3:00 PM EST

Announced at last night’s laughably bad Spike Videogame Awards was 2K Sports’ newest franchise, Don King Presents: Prizefighter.

Developed by Venom Games, which brought the Rocky and Rocky Legends games to the original Xbox and PS2, Prizefighter will not only focus on the boxing events themselves, but feature a career mode in which players will need to “overcome adversity, avoid temptation, and balance their commitments to train and promote, while focusing on the goal of ultimately winning and defending the title belt.” What that means exactly is anyone’s guess (ear-biting mini-games?), but the story will play out in a sports documentary-style narrative.

The legendary boxing promoter and hairstyle aficionado Don King had this to say:

“In all my years working in professional boxing, I have never seen anything come as close to recreating the thrill, the intensity, the courage and the spectacle of the sport. Don King Presents: Prizefighter is more than a game- it is a glimpse at what life is like in and out of the ring for these incredible athletes.”

Videogame boxing has long been dominated by EA’s rather good Fight Night franchise, so its nice to finally see a challenger step into the ring, especially one with so many ambitions.

The game will be out in spring of 2008 for the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii.
