Evidence Suggests World War II Setting for Treyarch’s Call of Duty 5

Call of Duty 5 Maybe

The recently released Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (pictured) was not only a brutally sublime romp through modern Russia and the Middle East, but also a much needed shot of adrenaline for a franchise that could have easily descended into one World War II rehash after another.

But next year, players might need to relinquish their M14’s in favor of M1 Carbines and take to the streets of Berlin, not Baghdad, if a freshly posted Treyarch job listing on Activision’s hiring site is to believe.

The job listing, titled simply “Level Builder- Call of Duty” informs would-be applicants that they need “working experience with shooter genres (console or PC). And if you’re a fan of World War 2 shooters, then even better!”

Very subtle.

Treyarch, acquired by Activision in 2001, was responsible for the rather enjoyable United Offensive expansion pack to the first Call of Duty and last year’s not-as-well-received Call of Duty 3.

The existence of Call of Duty 5 was revealed earlier this week with the Vivendi/Activision merger. While no developer was officially named at the time, it’s widely believed that Treyarch would be handling development.

It’s disparaging to see what could be a step backward for the series unfold before our eyes, but if nothing else, at least Infinity Ward has the time to perfect 2009’s inevitable Call of Duty 6.
