Mark Wahlberg May Play Max Payne

A number of Hollywood reports today indicate that Twentieth-Century Fox is in negotiations with Mark Wahlberg for the role of the titular character in the movie adaptation of Max Payne.
Wahlberg recently received acclaim for playing another tough-as-nails cop in Martin Scorsese’s 2006 Oscar-winning The Departed. He is currently filming Peter Jackson’s The Lovely Bones.
The movie is set to be directed by John Moore, whose past works include The Omen and Behind Enemy Lines.
Fan recommendations for the role included Clive Owen, who played a similarly trigger-happy gent in the recent flick Shoot Em’ Up, and James McCaffrey, ‘Rescue Me’ star and the man who has twice given voice to Max Payne. It’s safe to say many are still holding out hope for Peter Stromare as Vlad.
The movie has remained in limbo for the past year or so, but this recent development means that shooting (of two kinds, we’d imagine) will begin in 2008.
We were going to get in touch with Remedy for a statement, but then realized it’s probably 3 AM in Finland…tomorrow. Or maybe even the next day. We’re not exactly sure how the whole time-zone thing works, to be honest.
Personally, I’m just happy to be given an excuse to talk about Max Payne again.
