BioWare’s Upcoming MMO Based in KOTOR Universe

BioWare MMO

A source close to BioWare confirmed to us today that the studio’s upcoming untitled massively-multiplayer online RPG will be centered around the Star Wars universe, specifically that of Knights of the Old Republic, which the developer released in 2003. The game garnered critical acclaim and spawned a less-popular sequel, released by Obsidian two years later.

The game is being developed by the company’s Austin studio, formed in 2006 and headed by BioWare Creative Director James Ohlen, whose past credits include the first KOTOR, Neverwinter Nights, and Baldur Gate’s I and II.

This is not the first Star Wars-related MMORPG: Star Wars Galaxies debuted in the summer of 2003, followed by several expansions. It was generally well-received by fans and critics, but subscriber numbers plunged and never recovered after a controversial gameplay update in 2005. It’s estimated that the game now has fewer than 100,000 subscribers and less than 20,000 active players.

It’s currently unknown whether or not EA, which acquired BioWare last week, will act as publisher for this title, or if the studio had a previous arrangement with another publisher.

Expect the game sometime in 2009.

Editor’s Note- As no media from the game has yet been made available, the screenshot above is from the first KOTOR title.

Editor’s Note 2- We’ve gotten several emails asking about the validity of this news. The only rumors we post here at Primotech will explicitly be stated as such.

MMO means no actual grand finale for the kotor series. and this sux. instead of getting a nice story (and my hopes were rather high once I played kotor 2 - far better than the first), we’ll just get an endless “kill and repeat” thingie. I certainly hope this proves untrue.

random thought: the main story for the MMO goes like this: once there was a twilek whore named bioware, which sucked the dick of the EA android

I think this is exactly what the star wars mmorpg community needs. Unfortunatly i have to agree that galaxies has been royally screwed up, even though i play simply cuz there is NO alternative, this will give fans a nice alternative and hopefully they will listen to what the fans want instead of deciding to make huge changes that mess up game play and cause ppl to leave. I hope they have 3 or 4 factions, maybe sith, jedi, republic, and mandalorian that would rock.

Nothing is mentioned about KOTOR III. All that is mentioned is that it’s probably set in the same timeline. I’m sure they’ll make KOTOR III still, but with the MMO, probably not for a while.

I love the idea of a KOTOR MMO and I’ll be subscribing :D

I’d be happy with any sci-fi based jmo these days. Star wars would be Amazing but anything different to all this garbage fantasy stuff we have had for the last ten years is abreath of fresh air!

Bioware have funded this themselves so in all likelihood wouldn’t of needed to get a publisher so soon. End of the day, star wars is probably the. Biggest licence out there and deserves a good developer working on it. Bioware would be my number one choice and no doubts Lucas’s too as the fans have. Been asking for this for years! When swg came up for tender a couple years back it seemed Lucas went with Sony simply as a do over until the next project was ready. It does make sense but we will just have to wait until it is officially announced.

One thing is for sure though: a star wars mmo WILL rise again. Here is to hoping it’s bioware’s baby heh

Another point, just read the guy/girl above.

None of your points are any good.

    1) KotOR series?! Who mentioned the KotOR series? I heard it was based on the timeline in the same time. It’s not KotOR, just based in that timeline. That’s like saying Halo can’t be made because Doom own the rights to that year.

    2) EA aren’t stupid. At all. If they want to publish this game, they wont get the rights, meaning no profit. If one of their sub-companies builds it, then LucasArts publish, they still make profit. Some is better than none.

    3) No evidence?! Do you know how competative the computer games industry is? I’m a programmer, I know from first hand experience, it’s tough. The guy is semi risking his job by telling us this, let alone stealing evidence from the office to satisfy you.

Yes, take the report with a pinch of salt and don’t read it as gospel. But it is possible. It’s perfectly feasable for this to be in production. Is it? I’m not sure LucasArts would want a competator to Galaxies, but with the ever-failing MMORPG, they may be making this to pull some of the fans back. If it does come out, I’ll be jumping on the band-wagon, if it doesn’t, I won’t be that disappointed. Many other great MMO’s coming out soon. Just don’t get your hopes up for a KOTOR MMO. But as someone else mentioned above, screw KotOR, where the hell’s Jedi Knight 4?!

Bioware made a shit decision a couple years ago when they allowed Obsidian to make the Sequal (the Sith Lords), damn near destroyed the Kotor Franchise. Personally I enjoyed Kotor || very much, but glitches and fading fan support killed the game. An MMO based in the KOTOR universe is an amazing idea, however, KOTOR ||| will need to be a console based game whereas the MMORPG will obviously be PC. Im not trying to damper anyones day (hell i just printed this entire page out so i can take it to my GameStop in a couple hours) but if Kotor ||| is not an Xbox 360 title I (and many other huge KOTOR fans) will always find it hard to forgive Bioware for makeing us fall in love with their game and then ripping from us a well deserved “BIOWARE” sequal.

Colemanzilla-Oh yes i work for GameStop…but Oh no you don’t know more then me.

P.S. Mass Effect!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!…oh also don’t forget the heavy rumors that bioware will be working on a Halo Rpg within the next 2 years. Which unfortunately would postpone the Mass Effect Trilogy.

Bioware began production on their super secret MMO in December ‘05, way before EA ever came into the picture.
    Source - http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3155486

In an Interview on October 11, 2007 at gamespot, the co-CEO’s stated that the unnamed MMO is the main reason for EA’s purchase and that “I can say one thing: It looks awesome! [Laughs.] We can say a second thing, too: It’s really fun to play. We’re already playing it. We were playing it just last week.” Thus confirming the game has been in development for nearly 2 years already.
    Source - http://www.gamespot.com/news/6180866.html

Also, if you can remember at that time (12/05) a few press releases about kotor3 were leaked and quickly dismissed by Bioware as a hoax. Not to mention an interview with the writer for the kotor comic series, John Jackson MIller, that also came out in December ‘05 stating: “there’s going to be another Knights of the Old Republic video game for sure.”

A .pdf from the EA acquisition listing all the past and future games from Bioware - notice the New MMO doesnt have Owned IP checked - Meaning it is indeed a licensed IP, just like Star Wars or Dungeons and Dragons.

Insiders knowing that Bioware being in production with another Star Wars MMO could be responsible for all the rumors flying around in early 2006 that SOE was loosing the Star Wars license, which may not be so false after all. I hate to think of SWG’s player numbers in 2009. That would be 10 years since SWG started production and could also very well be the end of the SWG/SOE license contract with Lucas Arts, just in time for its replacement.

I agree. I feel that the KotOR universe would make a terrific MMO, and I’m craving a replacement for SWG, but in addition they’re going to need to make a third RPG game. If Bioware is creating the MMO, it would seem logical that they’d also be creating KotOR III, and it would be out of Obsidian’s hands.

They cant do this! Are they insane. KOTOR was a great game because it was single player. If it is turned in to a MMO, they will lose massive amounts of hard core KOTOR fans. More so if they do it how they did SWG, and charge players up the ass monthly.

If the next KOTOR game gose the way of the MMO, I wont play. Do you hear me biowear!? If you turn KOTOR into a Online RolePlay, pay to play game I wont play.

You can make it a option to do it online, sure, Halo has that option, as dose many other games. But if you take KOTOR and turn it into another SWG, you can kiss your millions of KOTOR fans good bye

  51. Wolf Ritter on October 24th, 2007 6:28 am

Oh great, more black-and-white shit, really I think the time period that the Legacy comics are set in could use more exposure, as it gives you more than good and evil. You have the Jedi, beholden to the force. The Sith, who try to bend the force to their will. Then the Imperial Knights, who use the force to benefit the citizens of the Second Galactic Empire.

  52. Yahoo.se on October 24th, 2007 8:05 am

The best thing would be a KOTOR 3 as a singleplayer just as the previous games… mmorpg is an too overrated playstyle. I will never pay a huge sum for the client then pay every month so i could play a game I already bought.

  53. Brandon Peat on October 24th, 2007 8:22 am

I saw this coming a long way off and don’t know how I feel about it…

The KOTOR universe DEFINITELY bears revisiting. The first game was stellar and the second left things really hanging. (And don’t blame Obsidian for KOTOR 2: if Lucasarts hadn’t rushed their development and instead had given them time to fully implement their endgame ideas, it would have been amazing. I’m eagerly awaiting the Team Gizka restoration mod.)

But I agree with those above who bemoan the fact the next KOTOR installment is going MMO. I love RPGs, but that is precisely because they have a beginning, an end, and an epic storyline in the middle. The open-endedness of the MMO environment would be fun for a while but grow tiring eventually. I also have serious problems with monthly fees; I don’t log enough game time per week or even per month to warrant that. I want to play at my own pace for a reasonable amount of money.

And it really doesn’t matter if the title of this MMO is “KOTOR 3″ or if it’s some side title: the fact that we’re getting a KOTOR MMO means no single-player KOTOR for at least several more years, if ever.

We’ll see what happens…I’m not excited yet.

  54. Ad on October 24th, 2007 8:56 am

Fuck they just could haved finished the open ends with K3 and then ruined the franchise with some lame MMORPG. Who ever thinks this is going to continue the experience or plot of KOTOR I & II is mistaken, this is just a cheap spin off.
Im not saying this because i have something against MMOs but they cant possibly bring the KotOR experience into an MMO, its just a SP game and it wont work otherwise.

Just hope they come to making a real SP sequel.

I agree Roger… What a load of crap! I don’t want an MMO! I want an RPG on XBOX! This is ridiculous! Any fan of the series wants to see the end of the Revan/Exile/Outer-Rim storyline. Coupled with the failure of SW:G, I think this project is heading in a direction that most fans don’t want it to go. It’ll sell though. You could shit in a box and write ‘KOTOR III’ on the front and it’ll move off the shelves.

  58. Attonil on October 24th, 2007 7:25 pm

if this is true this is what millions of star wars fans have been waiting for :)

  59. Ryan on October 24th, 2007 7:26 pm

I just hope that this isn’t a replacement for KOTOR III. If it is, I will be very sad.

This game is supposed to be single player. It’s YOUR experience, and a very cinematic one at that. It’s almost like a book. You don’t huddle around a book with a few friends, you play it at your own pace on your schedule. The game revolves around you. I don’t want to have to be called “RyanIZkoolLOL245″ I want to be called Ryan. And I want deep character relations.

Of course, if this is in addition to KOTOR 3 then Woopee! I hope it’s in the timeframe of the Mando Wars, that would be pretty cool. I do have a few hopes for it though.

VOICE ACTING - Galaxies sucks at this, all the characters have no life in them at all. KOTOR is known for it’s great voice acting, I would be severely disappointed if it’s not implemented.

SAME (SIMILAR) COMBAT SYSTEM - I hate how WOW and SWG are run. I want the control scheme to be just like KOTORs. That would make me happy. I mean, of course, they would have to make the force powers and stuff on all the F# keys but, other than that, it should be similar.

CHARACTERS FROM KOTOR - Der, obviously. But I would also like a few from the KOTOR comics and some that were mentioned but not shown. If this is from the Mandalorian Wars then I definitely want to see a Hooded Jedi and an exceptionally tall Jedi recuiting their classmates. I want to be able to talk to teenage Bastila and talk to Kreia while she’s still a jedi. In short, I hope they utilize this to really expand the storyline and characters backgrounds. Also, It would be really cool if they could put in the same conversation system, so that while your talking to…Vrook, some guy named “BobaFeetlol” doesn’t stand on top of him and make the experience uncinematic.

Basically, I just want a TRUE KOTOR experience that you can play with a few friends.

  60. bobbynicjr on October 24th, 2007 9:53 pm

ok, first i need to ask, how much of a chance that this is actually real? second thing is is rtheres any chance this can come out on the 360? i would love it to be played on the 360 but if its on the computer ill still buy it. I have always dreamt of a star wars MMO, i played galaxies for about 3 months and it had the best ideas but it just lacked in gameplay. my favorite game would be a KOTOR MMORPG on the 360 and have a few ideas that galaxy did (like houses and cities etc.) but make it a lot better, like no MMORPG we have ever seen before. i garuntee youll get buyers and youll steal a fair few WoW players.

There’s a reason site’s like IGN haven’t reported this - it’s not official. Here’s another reason to be skeptical: EA owns Bioware now. EA publishes EA-developed games. LucasArts publishes Star Wars games. Doesn’t mean it can’t happen, but it could be a deal-breaker.

  65. Qel Droma on October 25th, 2007 4:30 am

first of all my faith in Bioware has been shattered slightly by selling out to those cockbites (a.k.a. EA). and if they did sell out, I wouldn’t be too shocked to hear about one of the worst ideas ever. KOTOR doesn’t belong in the world of MMO’s, it was a definative RPG, one of the greatest ever made. It had story and wonderful gameplay, but to turn it into an MMO is just like a circle jerk: yeah everyone jerks by themselves, while this is fine, but it feels a lot dirtier and cheaper when other people are there. Yes graphic, but do you get the point?

    OK this sounds cool.

But I think a bunch of us are loosing sight here.

To start, I am a veteran player just returning to SWG. SOE HAS screwed it up but yet fixed some things. Not many but some good ideas came from NGE. YES I said it.

It reports that the “Super Secret MMO Project” is based in the same era as Kotor. That does not mean it IS Kotor. You must realise that the universe is a BIG place and there are a great many OTHER things going on at the same time as the events as KOTOR I & II. So this doesnt mean that K3 will be a mmo just that IF this is accurate that there COULD be a MMO and K3. I would suspect that K3 would be released first and then the MMO.

I would also hate to see K3 as a MMO only. SO dont hate on me there.

Ok as for a MMO based in the same time line as KOTOR. It has a unique advantage that SWG doesnt. NOT AS MANY RESTRAINTS.

Think about it. When SWG came to us it was set in the middle of the orig trilogy. With Lucas saying “Dont mess with the Movie story Line in any way.” By setting the MMo in the past (kotor) there is very little written about that time compared to the time line from Episode I to after the New Jedi Order. This means more content, more surprises, more and new Star Wars Lore, and ALOT more latitude for Bioware to have writing story line. 1000 years of Lore time with little current info on. This is a good thing in many ways. It is also harder for bioware to ‘invent’ new content not only that makes sense to the fans of both SW & KOTOR but also Mr. Lucas doesnt slap them in the face for writing.

I too am not placing all my eggs in this basket. I was also a victom of EA before when they murdered Earth and Beyond. I also want a good sci-fi MMO.

  77. Darth Gigas on October 25th, 2007 11:13 pm

Personally I enjoyed the Kotor games both of them. I don’t like Starwars Galaxies because of the fee. While i am all for a kotor online game as long as they don’t put down some monthly fee I’ll probably get it.

  78. Andrew on October 26th, 2007 12:33 am

I agree with all the complaints, make an old republic game if you like in the end who really cares what time an MMO is set it wont make any difference to the fact thta the sole puropse is to go around killing things ganing expereance (as fun as it is) and in the end your actions have no implication on the world so some new person can come along and do every mission you just did.

Just please also make KOTOR 3 as a single player (or restricted multiplayer with drop in drop out freinds) so you can have a finish to the saga and i fell like i have made some kind of noticible imprsion on the star wars universe

  79. chad on October 26th, 2007 7:15 am

You guys no nothing about mmos if you dont think they develop stories, the old republic is a great setting for an mmo because we dont know what happens, that was one thing that was wrong for Galaxies they couldnt expand the story. Whose to say you wont encounter Revan or the Exile in the game? Just because your not playing as them again doesnt mean nothing good will come. What if theres an instance where you actually fight along side of Revan? And this game wont be much different from KOTOR cause it was an RPG anyway, you still killed people to gain xp and level, all this is doing is adding a multiplayer component.

  80. ForceWound on October 26th, 2007 11:01 am

The main point is the monthly fee. Who the hell would ever want to pay a monthly fee for just being able to play one game. I can see paying a fee for xbox live, because you can play infinite games with multiplayer settings. I will be very sad if this game charges you a fee to play, as I will NOT be purchasing the game if that is the case. The Old Republic era is so much more interesting than any of the newer sagas IMO, and it will be a shame if I cannot be included in the fun if a ghey monthly fee is required.

How badass would KoToR 3 be if the storyline followed Revan into the unknown regions, only to have the Exile meetup with him to join forces halfway through, fighting the True Sith. This could expand the universe canon as we know it, adding extra-gallacical locations that will be considered canon for all future sagas.

  83. ForceWound on October 26th, 2007 4:27 pm

Well then, don’t make the fuckin game an MMO at all. MMO’s are gay. Fuck the needs of an MMO, and rely more on the needs of the Fans. Starwars Galaxies is the biggest piece of shit game i’ve ever seen, so is ghey warcraft. Necessary evil, my ass. We’ve been waiting years for simply an announcement of the next KotOr game, then they come and announce that its going to be an MMO that you have to pay for. Bullshit. Just give us what we want. A game with a plot, and a script, which delves deeper into untold mysteries about the old republic. If I wanted to play an MMO, i’d turn gay and play warcraft.

  84. Cory on October 26th, 2007 4:51 pm

I’m a huge KoToR fan but I think if they were to make a MMO It wouldn’t really be a KoToR MMO its would be a Star Wars MMO. I think they could still come out with a RPG and a MMO like blizzard did with warcraft.

  87. Don on October 26th, 2007 8:00 pm

The only way I can see a Star Wars mmo working is if it had a Battlefront feel combined with a command and conquest approach. The only mmo I have played is FFXI. I liked FFXI, but thought it was too time consuming getting to places(it can take 1 hour to get to some places at times). I almost wish instead of an “old republic” time frame, they would make a Star Wars mmo based on the “New Jedi Knights” era(with the Yug. Vong having some kind of role). They could have the time frame be after the destruction of the 2nd Death Star and incorporate all the factions(imperal, republic, Jedi, Dark Jedi, Yug Vong, bounty hunter/crime sindicate) that would be around(the Yug Vong) could be part of an expansion(expanded universe)

  88. Alemond on October 26th, 2007 8:25 pm

While SWG died, and KotoR2was a butchery you can’t blame what happened to those games on Sony and Obsidian entirely. LucasArts told Sony to do the NGE and to make Jedi a starting class to get more players. LucasArts also forced Obsidian to rush out Kotor2 for christmas and to stop whatever they were working on and rush the ending hoping the name of the first one could carry the second. KotoR2 had a LOT of potential and the people at Obsidian were PISSED when they had to hack it down. That’s why they left the info for the cut stuff still on the disc. They wanted people to see what they intended. That’s why mod makers ane trying to fix KotoR2 andput everything back.

  89. Cory on October 27th, 2007 12:26 am

Yeah KoToR2 wasn’t that bad. It had a half decent story. Just thing what it would have been like if they give it the right time.

    Just my 2 cent…

  93. Skwoz on October 27th, 2007 8:23 pm

For years I have been hearing rumours about this, but I’ll take it with a grain of salt until Bioware officially announce it. If it is the case though, I would love to see a Star Wars MMO out there that has some credibility.

The problem with MMO’s though is people relate it back to what is already out there. Most of these companies either follow the generic “hack and loot” style, but the genre is only in it’s initial stages. Blizzard managed to make the genre truly massive with WOW, but seem to think that is the be all and end all.

I have real confidence in Bioware taking MMO’s to the next level. They have always been story driven with their games, and I am sure that a Star Wars MMO under their direction will draw players in to the game, wanting more than the usual MMO experience we are all used to.

This sucks, I will not be buying this game. Unless its released with singleplayer optional tee-hee.

MMORPG’s are not RPG’s. They are basically multiplayer competitions.

  97. Bob Jack on October 29th, 2007 7:02 pm

All I can say is that I feel by KOTOR becoming an MMO it will lose its storyline and become really unfocused, which was really involving and one the main points that made me love the first kotor so much.

Besides I want to learn the story at MY OWN PACE, not HAVE to login at certain times to see the next plot interaction / event.

I’ve been saying it for a long time, they needed to have swg in a different era. There were too many Jedi running around for that game. And that was before NGE.

A KOTOR era mmo is great. It gives you more factions to work with. Jedi, Sith, Mandalorians. This isn’t some KOTOR III replacement. It’s just a Star Wars MMO in the KOTOR timeline. I just hope that when they come up with the ruleset, we don’t get NGE quality updates.

As for KOTOR III single player. If it were made, it would be on the XBOX 360. Microsoft bought exclusive rights to the series from Lucasarts, which is why you never saw it cross platform from XBOX or PC.

Y’know, I realized something. I see these people complaining about how ”they won’t be the center of the universe.” basically, grow the fuck up. It didn’t revolve around you in the RPG’s anyway, it revolved around the war, the republic the sith, not your character. Yeah, you played a major part in it, so what? You still weren’t the unbelievably main character in the game, and your actions had LITTLE to MEDIUM effect on the game. So what? I kill somebody and a message pops up saying I earned darkside points, that only meant that I have to watch a different cinematic, because in reality..it didn’t change anything you could see, interact, kill, loot, roleplay, or figure out with. You only had these little messages that you found out through playing the game that doing this and this is your consequence, or your reward. And who the fuck ever said this game wouldn’t come out to 360? If you take a look, mmo’s like AoC are being placed out on the Xbox 360 eventually too, so not only will computer lovers be able to play it, 360’s will too. You’ll need to buy a keyboard, but who cares?

Yes, I see the point about ‘’seeing so and so do the same misson and feels uncinematic.” But uhmm, yeah. L2USETHEIGNOREBUTTONPLZ? And if you don’t think that you won’t be immersed into the game like the RPG’s, have you ever heard of roleplaying? No, I don’t mean the walk into a cantina and say ”How ya doing?” I mean roleplaying, the serious crap. What you character would feel, it’s so possible to do all these things you’re complaining about.

And on the ”kill something for xp and loot.” Isn’t that basically the same fucking thing you did in Kotor 1 and 2? You killed shit, and you levelled. You went through a huge ass storyline, killing shit, getting xp, looting it, selling it at the merchant. That’s what an mmo is bud, except now if it’s an mmo, not only will you do it, but you can go into a cantina, roleplay some crap up and get a group of people to go with you and do it, oh wait..omg, that’s like..oh, my gosh! The third people party in KOTOR and KOTOR2. Holy crap!

Oh come ON, about the ”Hack and slash.” who’se to say they wouldn’t implement a new type of fighting system that nobody would of ever had seen before? Sort of like Age of Conan did? They created a huge PVP/PvE system that mostly everybody that’s heard of it loves it.

Oh, and what the fuck? Who EVER said this game would be based around the KOTOR1 and 2 Storyline anyway? You might be placed 100 years AFTER all that happened, when Jedi are alive again, and the Sith are trying to defeat them like always. Or, who knows? You might be in unexplored space, brought there by a group of bandits.

Is it the best idea? No. But shut the fuck up, okay? If you want a kickass storyline, buy the rights from the companies and htie a team of professionals, until then. Don’t bitch, please.

    If you can’t pay 15.00 a month.

    Get a job.

    If you wanna be immersed.

    Roleplay.

If you don’t wanna see somebody doing the same thing as you.

Invite them to your group, have fun and roleplay.

If you don’t want a typical hack and slash mmo.

    Create your own fucking game.

If you think KOTOR and KOTOR2 were awesome RPG’s because they were on the 360.

It came out for the PC you fucktits.

Yeah, i’m sure I missed alot of shit I’ve heard people argue about in this chat..but I don’t care, you’re all being fucking stupid.

    /rant on

It’s about time, if this is actually true :)

My only complaint really is that I wish this MMO would take place after Episode VI, Return of the Jedi. I use to play SWG (started in May 2004) and was a roleplayed a little on occasion (COME ON, who didn’t want to be a Force Sensitive Master Swordsman/TKM/Pikesman? YEAH, I KNOW YOU DO!!!). I unlocked Jedi a week before the CU (May 2005) and I was there for over a year after the NGE (New Game Enhancements, Nov 2005) was released. I finally gave up around November/December 2006. It was going no where.

The CU honestly was a rip off of Everquest 2’s combat system (which I started playing in September 2006). If you actually play Everquest 2, you can take out the entire storyline and insert “X” Star Wars storyline and you would basically have the CU, with a different skills system. And the NGE, I have no idea where that came from.. but people said it was like WoW a lot.

People did complain about the number of Jedi when the NGE was released.. Now lets face it. Jedi is MEANT to be a BETTER playing class then normal playing classes, but it has to be watched carefully and let it be semi-difficult and take time to obtain. Hopefully, Jedi will be a playable class again, but let it take work, as it did in SWG before the NGE. If this is truly taking place in the KotOR timeline, this was a time when Jedi did run around a little… I just hope it’s not a starting class.

I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY hope Jedi is actually taken care of this time around. You SWG people know what I’m talking about.

Of course, I’ll likely give it a try anyway. I’ve been Star Wars deprived for a while now.. Can’t wait for The Force Unleashed this spring.

Pfft, alot of crying i have been reading. I mean so what dudes go cry somewere else. If it does happen, i will think it will pull all the old SWG players (like my self) to play Kotor online, and then some. So in the long run, i would make the MMorpg. Then release one for xbox360(possibly 1 year later), so people will stop crying.

  133. Paranoidmarv on December 3rd, 2007 9:47 pm

This news excites me both as a person looking for a new MMO, and a huge fan of the KOTOR universe.

I don’t see anything wrong with a KOTOR MMO, because it’s in Bioware’s hands after all. You can’t bash the idea because of whatever prejudices you have based on the current MMORPGs. Mass Effect is clear evidence of Bioware’s love for telling a good story and what that means is we might get the first MMORPG that actually tells a story. Don’t challenge me with how that’s even possible, Bioware develops the games and I have confidence in them.

If it’s an MMO, I hope it’s not an MMO in the way that WoW, Guild Wars, and SWG were MMOs. They were good games but I didn’t play them as I played KOTOR 1&2. Everyone seems to be confident with an SP K3, so why can’t we be confident that Bioware will deliver a great experience either way.

Let’s just hope this is more than just a rumor.

Sheesh alot of you guys are morons. It’s not the next chapter of kotor it’s based around the timeline. It’s not going to be kotor 3 just a kotor mmo. Face it the mmo genre is super popular right now and whether you’re on the band wagon or not bitching is’nt going to make it go away.I like both mmo’s and single player rpgs so either way it would’nt bother me.But if you don’t like mmo’s (or are just to cheap to pay the measly 15 bucks a month) just save the bitching for the official announcement because , as of now, it’s not number 3 just an mmo based on the franchise.

The one and the ONLY THING, this new star wars based game should take from swg is the player independence dynamic. (aka player cities, crafting/player ran economy, and DIVERSE proffesions, give me 42 over the standard 9 peice of shit ANY DAY! and hybrids made everything even more awesome.)

think about it what type of gamer spends more money on there system PC or Consol ? i have a pc i spent $3000 on it, i can afford to pay $15 a month to play a game but i don’t because there is no game worth playing YET and i tried them all. I think the technolgy is there to make a star wars game fun for all meaning mmorpg, fps even rts whatever you are into. for me i would pay out the ass if i could wield a mouse that looked like a light saber kinda like the new remote light sword for the WII. ppl are paying $100 to play guitar hero 3 just to get a little guitar that sits in the corner collecting dust i would pay the same to get my own light saber. but can u imagine sword fighting in real time combat with full sword movement and maybe becoming a dark sith lord that every 1 on that server is trying to assassinate or raiding parties that destroy whole planets then discover new ones that would be epic i would never put the mouse/light saber down so for some ppl it mite not be that great but the game is so far away from the finish line who’s to say what will happen lets just hope it s better than it’s forefathers.

First of all, none of this is confirmed. But, if the intention is to create an MMO based on KoToR I think the single player RPG audience can safely bet on BioWare developing the MMO over a few years and releasing KoToR III in the meantime. A successful third installment of the series would just reinforce and bring attention to the company and the game. It would be a good stepping stone for the launch of the MMO as well. Blizzard did the same thing with the Warcraft series and it wouldn’t suprise me any if BioWare looked to emulate what had worked for WoW.

First, thete should be Four Main factions
    .Jedi
    .Sith
    .Republic
    .Mandalorian

And in these classes there can be differnt proffesions, for example in the Mandalorian Class, you could have Combat Medic, Solider, Officer etc, then in Jedi you can have Jedi Guardian, Jedi Senital etc.

This Game will put a Nail in SWGs Grave, and this will be even better if its only an MMO, cause there will be major PVP, and you can go through the story with friends……………and there better be space like SWG, I was a great pilot on that game, We need to know that this game is Official.

  150. Rich on January 5th, 2008 3:21 pm

After reading all the above posted comments I had a few thoughts on this I’d like to share with you all. Bear in mind, my thoughts are based solely on the notion that this rumored KOTOR MMO is even true.

    1. I’ve been playing SWG since 2003 and I would love nothing more than to see it repaired to it’s former glory. However, since SOE has recently stooped to offering player recruitment incentives, and continues to force grouping missions amidst an ever-shrinking player base, I just don’t see that happening. I am a life-long SW fan and since the advent of MMO’s, had always hoped to immerse myself in the SW Universe. SWG offered that until the NGE destroyed the game as we knew it. Now it is little more than a suped up console game. I play both PC and Console games, so I have nothing against them, in fact I have every SW title ever released, I enjoyed KOTOR very much. So…i said all that to say this:

    a. SWG is a failure in most (but not all) respects, but it still has some very valuable parts that Bio-Ware/LA could benefit from. Namely a loyal SW fan following for one. Two, 4 years of SWG experience has shown what to include and NOT to include. SWG has one of the best player creation models I’ve ever seen. The player housing is second to none to show off all your goodies. The IG-economy is screwed up, BUT…crafting proffs offer an alternative when you just don’t have a need to blow anything up that day, and it can be profitable. SWG space is still the best space-sim out there IMO. So Bio-Ware, I hope your writing all this down…(yeah right).

    b. Jedi is a money maker, period. So…how do you offer Jedi and offer it is a palpable profession amongst non-jedi? Set the game in a SW time period where Jedi/Sith were prolific. What about an alternative for the lightsaber haters? Easy, Mandolorian and Republic factions as other posters here have said.

    c. Here’s another thought on the Jedi equation…it can STILL be an MMO and use the decision based faction. For example, in some SWG missions there are some Jedi like prompted responses to NPC interactions, and some very non-Jedi like ones. The player response could dictate factional alignment ala KOTOR…just an idea.

    d. Now for the PC Vs. Console argument, I would submit that SWG, like I stated before, is now very much like a mixed shooter/mmo with the NGE. The trouble was, it wasn’t from the beginning and the drastic change alienated many of the adult player base. However, start a game like that from the start, then at least the players will know from the start what to expect.

    e. One of the great things I loved about the original version of SWG, was the sheer mass of alternatives. The Universe was MASSIVE and I could do WHATEVER I set my heart on..hell, there were 32 profession combinations to choose from…now 9. A KOTOR MMO could offer that…and should. I agree that each faction should have its specific prof alternatives, such as Mando or Republic Officer,Commando, Medic, Jedi Guardian, Sith Assassin, etc. Great idea you guys!

    2. The fact is, SOE stopped listening to its players and focused on beating WoW. Ridiculous. Personally I don’t like WoW for many reasons, but thats another post for another website. WoW players like it for being WoW, likewise SWG players liked it for being Star Wars. To rob the adult player community of that, and in the shamefully deceitful manner in which NGE was delivered was one of the biggest wrongs I can think of in my almost 17 years of gaming. So, I’d like to see a mix of both. A game that is engaging enough for adult players, but just simple enough for the kiddies. I would also suggest a PVP instance for all the l33t speakers and smak-tards. I enjoy PVP, but I’d prefer it without all the immaturity…good luck with that…I know, but at least they’d be somewhat confined to the Romper Room.

    3. Is IS a rumor, so like all rumors treat it as such, so anything could happen. Sadly, it appears we know anything until late ‘08 or 09′. Until then, enjoy the fun in speculating. Regardless, I will continue my sad devotion to SWG until a better Star Wars MMO alternative may or may not present itself.

There’s nothing like an MMO rumor to bring out the jackals.

I think that people are mistaken when they think that this game will be about the KOTOR storyline… I think they meant that the game will take place during the KOTOR time period. This makes sense because during this time period there were thousands of Jedi. I’m guessing that many people will want to play Jedi and from a development point of view, this would be an excellent time period to fit into Star Wars lore. This was one of the problems that ate away SWG’s player base early on. Many players wanted to become Jedi yet during SWG’s time period there were very few. One of the inherent flaws of SWG was designing it around a very familiar time period. Putting the new SW MMO into another mostly undeveloped time period would eradicate much of the headache of trying to stick closesly to Star Wars movie cannon.

Best wishes to Bioware’s endevour! I’ll be leaving WoW for this game!

  159. David Allen Smith on February 12th, 2008 12:06 am

Jeiku I’m so glad someone finally said that. People are complaining about it being and MMO but what they don’t realise is that there will likely be a KOTOR 3 on console. Infact it is probably in the works Lucas Arts doesn’t want to compete with it’s self so they will likely bring these out at different times and after THE Force Unleashed. There is way to many sites over the past couple years with KOTOR 3 as a topic for developers to ignore how much they could make from releasing this title. If this MMO works out and it should they will likely start developing more games in the Old Republic timeline aswell. Honestly I like the Old republic in games and comics better then the movies and an MMO of Star Wars that is actually good would take what little of a life I have left and definately would pull me away from W.O.W.

First off, no this will not be a clone wars MMO..what are you thinking. They’ve already stated that it’s going to be based inside of the KOTOR timeline. Which leads me to my next statement..

It’s the KOTOR “ERA” not KOTOR III the next instalment. Personally I look forward to this..I’ve been playing SWG [Star wars galaxies] for a few years now. I enjoy it but often become bored to take breaks. The game is fun don’t get me wrong I’ve met tons of friends and hope some would come to Kotor online with me if it is released.

    And lastly…

I LOVE KOTOR WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT!!!! [Flails arms with chants]
Kotor rocks…I’ve played I & II…Darkside (Everytime basically) and lightside (Gotta try it). The games simply are a gods gift to us star wars lovers…I mean cmon…you can’t beat it.

I agree with all you postitive thinkers towards this game, all you dreaders stay away and let us Hope. And btw I too hope for A third installment. But MMO would also be a plus for me..Thats my two cents.

I currently still play SWG player names are Neccrid, Greyy, Corrvas, and Scarrlet on the radiant server. Email is xlordshadowx@hotmail.com

  167. Elu on March 28th, 2008 4:10 am

The claim is that KotOR Online will be set in the KotOR Universe and time-period. It does NOT say that it will be a replacement for KotOR III and as such have no grade finale. Although, as I have it, BioWare are not going to currently work on a KotOR III, that does not mean that a single-player KotOR III will not be made at some point in the future.

This can’t be the third KOTOR game. How could they possibly continue the KOTOR story in an MMO? It makes no sense. Plus there will be 500,000+ players with “revan” somewhere in their name. If they are actually going to make KOTOR III an MMO they need to make online play optional and off line play the bulk of the story.

    1) I’d be all over a well-done KOTOR based MMO, or any SW-based MMO. Hell yes. I would have been happy with SWG done right. I never cared to be a Jedi - go have your fantasy in the Jedi Knight single player game if that’s your fancy. I was happy to be my own person and have my own story/adventure; simply “living” in the closest thing to the SW Universe we’ll see is/was enough for me.

    2) An MMO in between EpII and EpIII (Clone Wars), or even between EpIII and EpIV might be really good too.

    3) Regardless what time period, if Jedi are going to be a selectable “profession” there should still be whatever strong enforcement necessary to somehow promote or compell proper role playing by these Jedi. They should live by some kind of Jedi Code of conduct. Players should be compelled to be “good Jedi” and take on the roles seriously, or it just wont work. Lots of “noobs,” or just immature azzhats, with a light saber and Jedi powers WILL ruin the game. Period. Maybe, just have bad actions that go against the Code turn them into Dark Jedi - PERFECT! Dark Jedi are by definition bratty impatient and immature (haha, like some people describe Anakin in EpIII). However, this conduct Code must somehow also cover discussions with other players in-game, which is, basically, is part of the role playing aspect.

    4) In general, George Lucas needs to take his Star Wars franchise with utmost seriousness and continue to work hard to protect the integrity of the Expanded Universe content (regardless of how well he has so far). He often cites that he doesnt care what others think - it’s his creation, his “art” and so he can do what he wants. Fine Lucas, but if you really care about your art, you’ll also care about protecting its integrity, not just for the fans, but for its survival. Sure, taking one’s self too seriously can be bad, but please take your work seriously to extent of dignifying and protecting it. Suggestions that Lucasarts was the one to push the NGE change to SWG, if true, would be contradictory and very disturbing for the future love of fans for the franchise.

    5) To Duwhitegoku, and any others, if it’s SOME kind of MMO, and Lucasarts and Bioware are collaborating on it, what OTHER subject is it really likely to be?

    6) Finally, as to the future of MMOs (this part may be too late for whatever Bioware has now set forth): I am all about a player-driven world, player-driven content; a virtual world where player actions have consequences, and matter; where experiences are infinitely diverse and “real,” and players have genuine interest and stake in the experience; where risk is real and thus so is the reward; a virtual world that is constantly changing to reflect the choices and actions of its inhabitants. Player driven content is key to sustainability (content creation is a huge task), and to relevance and compelling realism and experiences. Complexity, near-”atomistic” crafting, diverse player economies, huge variation of professions (combinations of skills makes more sense than specific pre-defined professions). To implement this in an IP-franchise-based MMO “game,” I suggest a balance between game developer action and player actions. That is, developers function to drive high-level story/plot events (i.e. they would play role of the Emperor, or Vader, thus ensuring canonistic integrity), while players handle many of the less visible but still critical roles within the political power structures.

    OK. Thanks for reading.

I think it would be a cool idea. IF THERE WERE NOT FREAKING MONTHLY FEES!!!

    -in my opinion-
I think that they should make kotor 3 first and then make the mmo a seprate game that would be uhhhh…. better

I hope, KOTOR 3 will continue the story of Kotor I & II, despite of MMO

I played SWG. It was the BEST MMO EVER! Varent did one hell of a job developing the Star Wars universe.. Then SOE took it over and drove it into the ground trying to make it like World of Warcraft. It was a persistent vibrant real time sand box MMO. Something that WoW is not.
I hope the don’t make this Zone Dependant like Conan and Guild Wars.. It ruins the virtual world immersion.

Why on earth would they make KotoR into a MMO ?
It doesn’t make any sense they have Star Wars Galaxies already why not simply revamp it instead?
The KotoR series have been some of the best hours i’ve spend on any RPG.
It’s supposed to be single player with a epic story.
You cannot get that with a MMO only RPG can deliver such a epic gameplay experience.

It could be friggin awesome but its going to be hard to bring the feel of the first 2 kotor to an mmo game. If it stays similar where 1 choice can hugely affect quest lines and even end game its gonna need a ton load of instances or variations for it to work. Definitley keeping an eye on this one

  194. Dlate on July 20th, 2008 12:39 pm

Kotor mmo is confirmed by EA as of 2 days ago, titles are gonna be Star Wars Legens or Star Wars The Old Republic.

    I cant wait
