Activision and Bizzare Games

Santa Monica based Activision Inc. annouced today that it has acquired the developer of the Project Gotham Racing franchise (owned by Microsoft), Bizarre Creations.

Activision notes this move is specifically geared for expanding their genres, as they did when they acquired Red Octane (Guitar Hero II) and their sights are set on the racing genre. While Microsoft retains the IP for PGR, Bizarre Creations does have over a decade creating that brand of racing games and Activision does not have a strong racing portfolio. The PGR4 team and the team working on The Club, third person shooter for SEGA, will finish up their work and then transition to new projects, specifically cited as AAA titles for Activision (a racing game and a character game).

Bizarre is also known for its arcade shooter, Geometry Wars, and will be continuing to work on Geometry Wars: Galaxies (to be released by Sierra). Bizarre retains its right to this IP. The status of Boom Boom Rocket is unknown at this time, though with Activision’s ownership of Red Octane, there may be some rhythm game still to be explored.

Bizarre will remain a single named developer under the Acitivsion umbrella, and Activision has committed to a “hands-off” management style.
