THQ Officially Unveils Saints Row 2

If you were as off-put by Saints Row’s lackluster ending as I was, THQ has some good news this morning. While it’s been no secret that Saints Row 2 has been in the works since the original wrapped up production, the publisher officially announced the first details of the game today. THQ’s internal studio, Volition, continues to act as developer.

Saints Row 2 will feature a newly transformed and expanded Stilwater, the city in which the game takes place, and affords the player much better customization options and a new selection of vehicles. Multiplayer will make a return, with both online coop and competitive game modes.

Most notable is this quote from Greg Donovan, lead producer at Volition:

“Saints Row 2 has a much darker and more sinister story that leads your character down a path of betrayal, revenge and redemption against the city that has left him for dead, although we’ve blended that with the same light-hearted humor from the original. Couple that with the most robust open-world feature set ever developed in the genre, and Saints Row 2 promises a gaming experience that will offer players the perfect balance of gripping narrative and compelling gameplay options.”

While the original was Xbox 360 exclusive, expect Saints Row 2 on both Microsoft’s and Sony’s new-gen offerings sometime in 2008.
