Super Smash Bros Brawl fans heaved a collective yell of joy after it was announced that the hotly anticipated Wii game would support online play.

Gamers can add their friends to a list and play anywhere in the world, though the official site notes there may be lag issues:
But because this form of communication is greatly affected by the distance between you and your opponent, your brawls may not run smoothly if you’re really far apart—like, for instance, if you’re connecting between Japan and America.
It has not yet been revealed whether or not the friends list will be based off of the Wii code exchange (for your Mii parade) or if it will be based off a specific game code for Super Smash Bros. Brawl, though given Nintendo’s choice with Metroid Prime 3: Corruption and all DS games, it is likely to be game specific.
You and your friends can enjoy tracking the win-loss ratio over time, sending each other 1 of 4 pre-written text messages during battle by use of the d-pad and training on a punching bag in between battles as you wait for everyone to sync up.

Random battles with anonymous internet users will also be an option for play. However, the win-loss ratio for these battles will not tracked and no messaging will be allowed. This is likely a move by Nintendo to support and foster the family friendly atmosphere it is catering to, as opposed to the unfiltered voice messaging supported by Microsoft’s Xbox 360. Furthermore, no names will be displayed for any of your opponents, nor will they see your screen name. An interesting move that may prove controversial.

More updates regarding the online play of the hottest brawler headed to the Wii are planned and Primotech will be there to cover them.
