I personally can’t seem to stop playing FIFA 07 on the 360 lately, so I was more than delighted to find this press release from EA in my inbox this morning.

EA announced today plans to feature ‘Be A Pro: Online Team Play’ in the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 iterations of FIFA 08. The feature will allow ten players (5-against-5, the rest being AI-controlled) to connect to a single match and face-off against each other; unprecedented for a FIFA game.

Each gamer will be locked into a single, fixed player of his choosing for the entire match, meaning he’ll need to take on all the responsibilities of positioning, tackling, and passing the whole time, evaluating the field situation on the fly with a unique camera system.

“At EA SPORTS our dream is to create a full 11 versus 11 online gameplay experience in which each user will have a set position during the match and train specifically for that position,” said Joe Booth, producer of FIFA 08. “Be A Pro is the first step in this direction, and now, with the ability to deliver five versus five online gameplay, we are moving even closer towards the realization of this dream.”

For some reason, this multiplayer mode will be available as a free download about seven weeks after the game ships to stores (October 9 in the States), rather than be included at release. We’ll glad wait the few weeks to be able to slide tackle our buddies into the turf. Expect more from us on FIFA 08 soon.
